The last fortnight of November is split in two by a football match under the rugby code.
“To my knowledge, this is the first time two cities have played each other under the rugby code.”, said Malcolm.
“An intriguing fact and one the world should remember.”, I said.
“This brings back memories of the first international rugby match at Raeburn Place.”
“Yes, I was there. I knew you were there too.”
Malcolm became flustered, “Excuse me?”
“You sound surprised? You were carefully selected, Malcolm. Mary and I researched your work and decided you were the one. Our ability to act with stealth is remarkable. Observe.”
Malcolm is tapped on the shoulder and spins around.
“Lovely day for a rugby match.”, said Mary, laughing wickedly.
“I don’t know what to……say.”, stuttered Malcolm.
“Nothing, Malcolm. Your job is to write it down. We have a deadline to meet and will help you every step of the way. You look after us, and we will look after you.”
“I best get back to work.” said Malcolm, and he walked over to the gathered players with his notebook in hand.
The game is played twenty-a-side, with Edinburgh beating Glasgow through a Thomas Marshall drop-goal. As the teams leave the pitch, we join the crowd with cheers, showing our admiration for another sporting first.
