Chapter 36 – Queens Park Coversazione

The Great Hall erupts into applause. Our motto translates into ‘Play for playing’.

Our President explains, “We have demonstrated our simple motto to our footballing brethren. Tonight we celebrate our achievements.”

Following a delicious starter, Captain Gardner regales Queens Park’s unbeaten 5 wins from 5 games. He commends our goalkeeper, “No one has put one single goal past him” and pauses “yet”. Laughter barrels around the room.

Our second course is subsequently followed by our Club Poet; Mr Smith. He stands up and entertains the guests with his own collection. The poem ‘The Greatest Invention’ is a particular favourite.

I finish eating my dessert. I stand up for my speech as the Club’s Resident Historian. “For Scotland, we are building on the magnificent history of the Foot-Ball Club.” I explain the discovery of the legendary John Hope.

“We are the vanguard of Scottish Football. We are the only Scottish member of the fledgling Football Association. Robert is the first Scottish Club representative to play in a Scotland v England match. We have featured in the papers. Our history is being chronicled for future generations”.

Our Club President completes the Queens Park Conversazione. “Queens Park is driving the story of football forward. The world is beginning to take note”.

The formalities close. The Orchestra starts into life. The dance commences.
