The first rule of this club reads “provide recreation and amusement to all of its members”. Our annual review was delivered at our Committee Meeting.
Recreation is abundant. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturday nights are consumed with practice and exercise. Formal matches are rare however our practice matches are played with unshakable regularity. Several formats promote fitness, competition and most importantly camaraderie. Lightweights v Heavyweights, Reds v Blues and Clerks v The Field.
My favourite uses a quirk of the City’s structure – North v South of Eglinton Toll. The Toll is also known as St Andrews Cross due to its shape of a Saltire. Victoria Road, Pollokshaws Road and Eglinton Street all meet here. There are few like this in the world and is one of Glasgow’s greatest crosses.
Amusement, other than football, is in its infancy. Last year we organised a concert in the Strathbungo Mission Hall. Unfortunately this was cancelled as the hall had to be pulled down. Unrelenting, this year we have organised a Conversazione for Friday 8 December. The Baronial Hall at South Portland Street selected with purveyors of fine food employed. Musicians are agreed and tickets sold. This will raise much needed funds for the club and Ladies and Gentlemen will have a great night of amusement.
Emelia and I are looking forward to it immensely.
