Chapter 7 – Training Glasgow Style

I walk down Hope Street and cross the Clutha. This is the port to the world. From here you can go anywhere. At the South Side Terminal I wait patiently for my train. My journey is made more comfortable reading Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. It is a fascinating historical tale of Medieval England. The character I like the most though is Locksley. He has a band of merry men. Very similar to our own band of brothers.

Tonight is training night. Smith Jnr came up with a great idea. Go for a run around the South Side. I was given the task of coming up with the route. We gather at Queens Park and start our little adventure. We head past the U.P. Church out towards Strathbungo. This church was built by my neighbour and is one of his greatest works. Out to Pollok Park we go. The seat of the Maxwell family, 146 hectares and a great place to run around. On our way back we go over Camp Hill and take in the city. It is truly magnificent.

We take on Hamilton Gymnasium next. It’s on foreign soil this time. Our second ever match. We are getting better, fitter and stronger. We can’t wait to put it altogether in a match! It is on Saturday 29 May, 1869.
