Chapter 4 – The First Match

Stirring from my deep slumber. First thoughts. Saturday? Yes. Work today? No. Play today? Oh yes.

The clock chimes 7am. I have been looking forward to this all week. Our first game.
On Tuesday we agreed to challenge the men from the YMCA. We are to meet at Queens Park Recreation Ground this afternoon.

But firstly I need to buy a football. So I’m off to Fraser and McLaren. Its a great department store on the corner of Argyle Street. We have all contributed a sixpence each.

We gather at the park. The pitch has been laid out. Old clothes are bundled into piles to mark the goals. Further bundles laid out to mark the playing boundaries. Mr Black is our captain. He is our general. His opposite number was a Mr Young.

In lovely sunshine. The game kicks off. Chasing. Kicking. Hacking. Laughing. It is a great afternoon’s entertainment. Hands are shook and both teams leave the park.

Mr Klinger reminded us of our next meeting on the 15th. We have now learned so much. All our heads are buzzing as we leave to go home.

Freshened up. Blue suit this evening. Pocket watch shows 7pm. I am off to the Western Club. Where else would you spend Saturday evenings? A whisky. A cigar. A day to reflect on.
